who we are

We are a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, a denomination committed to:

  • The Scriptures as the inerrant Word of God.
  • The doctrines of our historic Reformation heritage.
  • The spread of the Good News of Christ throughout the world.

our mission

Old Peachtree Presbyterian Church exists to glorify God and to extend the kingdom of Jesus Christ.

We aim to be continually growing in vital worship, in theological depth, in true fellowship, in assertive evangelism, and in deeds of compassion.

We are Presbyterian in government and Reformed in theology, with the distinctive vitality that grows from evangelism and discipleship.

our beliefs

As a congregation of the PCA, our doctrinal standards, subordinate to the Bible, are the Westminster Confession of Faith together with its Larger and Shorter Catechisms. Below is a brief summary of our beliefs:

  • We believe the Bible is the written word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error in the original manuscripts. The Bible is the revelation of God’s truth and is infallible and authoritative in all matters of faith and practice.
  • We believe in the Holy Trinity. There is one God, who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • We believe that all are sinners and totally unable to save themselves from God’s displeasure, except by His mercy.
  • We believe that salvation is by God alone as He sovereignly chooses those He will save. We believe His choice is based on His grace, not on any human individual merit, or foreseen faith.
  • We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who through His perfect life and sacrificial death atoned for the sins of all who will trust in Him, alone, for salvation.
  • We believe that God is gracious and faithful to His people not simply as individuals but as families in successive generations according to His covenant promises.
  • We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells God’s people and gives them the strength and wisdom to trust Christ and follow Him.
  • We believe that Jesus will return bodily and visibly to judge all mankind and to receive His people to Himself.
  • We believe that all aspects of our lives are to be lived to the glory of God under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

OUR HISTORY

Old Peachtree Presbyterian Church was organized on April 11, 1925, as Bethel Presbyterian Church by the Presbytery of Atlanta of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. The church’s original location was on the front of its current property near Duluth, Georgia.

As a small congregation in rural Gwinnett County, Bethel relied on supply pastors to fill her pulpit. The church ceased holding services in June 1952, but resumed services in 1953 under the impetus of Miss Mary Alice Juhan, a school teacher from nearby Lawrenceville. In 1981 the congregation became part of the Presbyterian Church in America.

In 1989 Bethel merged with the Oakland Road Presbyterian Church (PCA) of Lawrenceville and the new congregation chose the name Old Peachtree Presbyterian Church for the road on which the church was located. The late 1980s and early 1990s saw the area transformed from its historic rural character to a bustling suburb of Atlanta.

Pastor Alan Johnson began his ministry at Old Peachtree in February, 1995. In the years since, God has been pleased to build up the congregation in size, blessing us with many answered prayers along the way. One of those answers to prayer is a large number of children, including a number of international adoptions.

In March of 2000, the congregation completed and dedicated its current building to the glory of God.

In August 2015 we completed an expansion project that increased our worship seating and added classroom, gathering, and parking space.

Our history is a work in progress. We are thankful for what God has done, but we look forward to what he will yet do in us and through us.
